Summer and fall have passed and winter will be swinging into full gear. While the sun is peeking out from the sky later and later in the morning and setting sooner and sooner in the late afternoon, it is important to remember that it isn’t completely gone. While the amount of ultraviolet B (UVB) rays that penetrate the atmosphere are greatly diminished, the amount of ultraviolet A (UVA) that makes it through to the earth remains the same.
Sunscreen worn daily on the face, neck, and chest helps to decrease the amount of ultraviolet damage that accumulates in the skin with daily exposure and help prevent skin cancer. An SPF of 30 or higher is still a great idea. At Abadir Associates, we prefer zinc based sunscreens. Zinc and titanium dioxide, or physical blockers, work immediately, as opposed to chemical sunscreens. They also stay on well, absorb excess oil and may have some anti-inflammatory benefits. Zincs are now transparent, and can be incorporated into tinted formulas that look sheer and elegant. Zinc powders are also available in clear and tinted formulations. Powders have the advantage of being able to be applied over make-up without mussing it and not running into eyes. They are great for people who have sensitive skin, as are most zinc preparations.
Regardless of your skin type, make sure to use sunscreen year round in order to prevent sun damage and skin cancer. If you are concerned about your skin, please contact us regarding skin cancer screenings.
