What are facial veins?
In certain parts of the face, blood vessels tend to become dilated and appear redder and more noticeable than usual. These veins – called telangiectasias, spider angiomas, or just spider veins – usually appear on the nose, eyelids, cheeks, ears, and upper chest of fair-skinned people beginning in their forties or fifties.
Though not medically harmful, many people affected by facial veins consider them unsightly. There are a number of treatment options available to reduce their appearance.
What causes facial veins?
Facial veins are caused primarily by a gradual weakening of the elastic walls of the blood vessels in certain parts of the face. In their normal state, the blood vessels remain thin and invisible under the skin – but when weakened by age, blood vessels begin to dilate (increase in width) and become more noticeable under the layers of skin on the nose and cheeks.
Beyond simple aging, long-term sun exposure can increase a person’s likelihood of developing facial veins later in life. Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing (like hats with brims) can help prevent telangiectasias from forming. Their appearance can also be aggravated by exercise, alcohol, heat from a shower, or even by eating spicy food.
What facial vein treatment options are available to me?
There are several different treatment options available for spider vein removal. Consulting with your cosmetic dermatologist can help you make the right choice for you.
Laser treatment. Laser therapies utilize a high-energy laser to destroy visible blood vessels while leaving the surrounding tissue healthy and unaffected. Most patients require several treatments spaced 4-8 weeks apart. The procedure is only mildly uncomfortable (most patients compare the pain to the snap of a rubber band), and there is little to no down time afterward.
Intense pulsed light therapy. Similar to laser treatment, intense pulsed light treatment uses a broadband light to destroy visible blood vessels. Several treatments at regular intervals are also typically required.
