Injectables: What You Need to Know

BotoxSurgery isn’t the only way to rejuvenate. Many of our patients are loving the results they get from injectable treatments. We offer a wide variety of injectables and can treat everything from wrinkles to facial volume loss and even double chins. What’s your favorite injectable cosmetic treatment? If you don’t yet have a favorite of your own, come see us and fix up your trouble spots. You’re going to love injectables!

Neuromodulators: Botox and Dysport

Fade crow’s feet and frown lines with Botox. A powerful neuromodulator, this injectable temporarily halts muscle activity that causes certain types of wrinkles. Results appear just a few days after treatment and last 3-4 months. We also offer Dysport, a similar injectable treatment.

Our patients love Botox and Dysport for their ease. The treatment itself takes about 15 minutes, start to finish, and you can resume your regular activities immediately. Come in for treatment during your lunch and still have time to grab a bite to eat on your way back to work. No downtime!

Dermal Fillers: Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra, etc.

Fill in wrinkles and smooth out your skin with dermal fillers. These injectable fillers can sculpt, shape, and contour with effective results. Dermal fillers can also fill in lines and wrinkles and augment the lips. We even use them for hand rejuvenation. Results are often instant and can last as long as two years, depending on the fillers used.

We offer a wide range of fillers, including several hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the skin. It is very biocompatible and doesn’t require pre-treatment testing. During your initial visit we’ll examine your skin and make recommendations on the best filler options for you. Fillers can be used on their own, combined with other fillers, paired with Botox/Dysport, and even used in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments.

Fat Dissolvers- Kybella

For the dreaded double chin, we offer an exciting injectable option, Kybella. This injectable contains deoxycholic acid, a substance that aids the body in the breakdown of dietary fat. When injected under the chin it destroys fat cells, providing lasting improvement in the appearance of your profile.

Kybella is completely non-surgical. Downtime is minimal, if any. Most patients need a couple of treatments to achieve their best results.

What Are My Treatment Options for a Double Chin?

Do you have a double chin? Treatment options are available. Come in and talk with us for recommendations on the best course of treatment for your situation. Here are a few of your options:

  • Liposuction- Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from a problem area, like under the chin. This treatment isn’t for weight loss but, rather, for treating localized fat pockets. It is an excellent option for stubborn fat under the chin. It also removes jowls, or fat over the jawline and upper neck. During liposuction, small incisions are made in inconspicuous areas. A cannula is then inserted and suction is used to remove excess fat. This is a surgical procedure and does require some downtime but, once you’re healed, you should enjoy impressive and lasting results. You can still gain weight, but it will be focused in other areas—no longer under the chin.
  • Thermage- Liposuction is an excellent option for removing fat, but it doesn’t tighten up loose skin. We like to combine liposuction treatments with Thermage for fat removal + skin tightening. This can dramatically improve the appearance of a double chin—much more so than a liposuction treatment on its own. Thermage and liposuction work together for synergistic results. A non-surgical option, Thermage works by stimulating collagen production. Results are immediately visible and continue to improve with time.
  • Kybella- We are also pleased to offer a non-surgical, injectable treatment for fat removal under the chin. Newly FDA approved, Kybella destroys fat cells using deoxycholic acid, a natural substance that breaks down dietary fat. Kybella can improve the appearance of a double chin with minimal downtime and no surgery.

FAQ on Injectables

1. What are injectables?

Injectables for the purpose of improving one’s appearance are classified into 3 groups:

  • Neuromodulators which inhibit muscles from contracting. In USA these are Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, and are commonly used to prevent frown lines, crow’s feet and in a number of other sites as well. Both Drs Dale and Michelle Abadir have been using neuromodulators for 20 years
  • Filling injections which can be used for obliterating hollows, and helping fine lines and acne scars etc. These are numerous and all have different properties. The injector should understand the various properties and which are best suited for the individual patient’s needs. Both Drs Dale and Michelle Abadir have been using all the various “fillers” since each became available and offer all these to their patients unlike some other practices that only purchase from one manufacturer.
  • With the recent FDA approval of “Kybella”, a fat shrinking injection to permanently treat “double chins” we have a new “fat dissolving” type of injectable. Our office is among the first to offer this to our patients.

2. What is the difference between Botox and Dermal fillers?

Botox relaxes muscles which cause lines, while Dermal fillers do, as their name implies, fill—anything from hollows to fine lines.

3. What areas can be treated with Injectables?

Areas which can be treated with injectables are anywhere on the face, neck, decolletage and the backs of hands.

4. Are there other off-brand uses for Injectables and is this safe?

In USA when an injectable is approved by the FDA, it is legal to use it “off label” i.e. for a use not precisely what it was approved for, as long as it is not advertised or promoted in any way for this alternate use. For instanced, when Botox was first approved it was only for frown lines, but quickly we realized the potential to use it in many other areas and did so.

5. Which dermal filler is best for forehead wrinkles?

Forehead wrinkles have to be treated very carefully so there are no ridges when the forehead is relaxed. For this reason, Restylane Silk or Belatero are best as they are specific for fine lines.

6. Can I be allergic to Injectables?

Allergies to the injectables used these days are extremely rare. In the past, many were allergic to injectable “collagen” but this has not been used for many years as we have far better products available now.

7. I’ve heard of Voluma, is that different from dermal fillers?

Voluma is a denser, heavier type of product which, when used correctly, can give some lifting of sagging cheeks as well as filling hollows.

8. Can Injectables be used with other treatments?

We are constantly combining injectables with other treatments. Fractionated laser to smooth the skin surface, Thermage and other skin tightening procedures, microdermabrasion, and mini liposuction of jowl and under chin fat to name a few.

9. Can I use dermal fillers on my lips?

Dermal fillers are often used on lips as lips they tend to become thinner as we age and fuller lips are associated with youth and sensuality. They have to be used very carefully in order to produce a natural, attractive appearance, and not the ” sausage”, overfilled or “duckbill” look!.

10. What is the best Injectables for anti-aging?

All fillers help with anti-aging! The injector must have the experience and aesthetic sense to decide which will give the most desirable result in the various areas of the face, neck or other sites.

11. Are injections painful?

Most injections are done with very fine needles and are well tolerated. Anesthetic creams can be applied for a period of time beforehand if a patient wishes.

12. Can Injectables take place of a facelift?

Injectables can, and do replace facelifts, especially if started relatively early. Far fewer facelifts are being done these days.

13. Who should I trust to treat me with Injectables?

It is extremely important to choose an injector who has experience. Many practitioners of all different specialties are attending courses, often as short as 2 hours long to “learn” this art! Get a reference from a friend or relative who is having these treatments and you think looks good. These days, having injectables for cosmetic enhancement is becoming as common as going to the beauty parlor and people are more ready to talk about it than used to be the case.

What Are My Facial Contouring Options?

Has your face lost it youthful contours? As the body ages, fat deposits can develop in undesirable locations like the jowls, neck, especially under the chin. Also, loss of volume in the cheeks, temples and below the eyes can give a haggard, aged appearance. Restore a more youthful look with facial contouring. What are your options? Find out below.

Liposuction for Facial Contouring

When people think of liposuction, they often think ofWhat Are My Facial Contouring Options? body contouring, but the body isn’t the only area that can benefit from liposuction. It can be a very effective option for facial contouring as well. We use a “mini” or “syringe” liposuction with local anesthesia. Liposuction can permanently remove excess fat from the cheeks, chin and neck to transform your facial appearance. The results can be dramatic and the recovery period is minimal.

We perform facial liposuction here in our offices. After a consultation, a small cannula is inserted into the skin through a tiny incision. We carefully place each incision in an inconspicuous location to reduce the appearance of scarring. These heal in 2-3 days and are virtually invisible. Excess fat is then extracted, using either a syringe or gentle suction pump attached to the cannula. This gives us great control of the fat removal and allows us to sculpt and reshape the area. Both Drs. Dale and Michelle Abadir are highly skilled in creating subtle, natural-looking facial contours through liposuction.

Are the Results Permanent?

Liposuction is a permanent fat removal method. The extracted fat cells are permanently gone and will not ever regenerate. If you gain weight after treatment, the fat will distribute throughout your existing fat cells. Since facial liposuction permanently removes fat cells, fat will not be able to return to the treated area should you gain a little weight.

Complementary Procedures

Facial liposuction can transform your face on its own, but is often paired with other procedures for even more dramatic results. Safe injections can be used to fill unattractive hollowing, and Thermage can tighten lax skin with no downtime for an even more youthful appearance. If needed, excess skin can be removed. Talk with Drs. Abadir about which procedures can complement your facial liposuction.

We will be one of the very earliest practices to offer Kybella, the newly approved injection to reduce fat deposits under the chin.
