Why Millennials are Loving Botox

Most people are, to some degree, familiar with Botox and other dermal fillers. In the past, these treatments have conjured images of older men and women seeking to reverse the effects of aging. In fact, many still believe plastic surgery to be the refuge of older generations clinging to their youth. Little do they know how wrong they are.

Plastic surgery has recently taken over as one of the most popular surgical industries with cosmetic procedures hitting roughly $15 billion in annual earnings. What you may find surprising, though, is that millennials make up a bigger percentage of cosmetic procedure patients than ever.

In only half a decade, Botox treatments among people between the ages of 19 and 34 increased by 87%. When exactly did this shift take place, and why are younger patients considering Botox every year?

Joining Reality with Expectation

Unlike previous generations, millennials grew up in the age of the internet. By adolescence, social media was already a staple of life for many of them. This has put a greater emphasis on our appearance and aesthetic and how we present ourselves than ever before.

From selfies and photoshoots to cosplay and beyond, more young people are taking an active role in their appearance. For many, this doesn’t just mean exercise and a healthy diet, but also the occasional trip to a plastic surgeon for a cosmetic touch-up.

A Preventive Approach

While many consider Botox to be a treatment that reverses the effects of aging, millennials are starting to understand its true benefits. By starting Botox treatments at a younger age – as young as the early 20s for some – the wear and tear of time can be prevented before it begins.

With well-timed treatments from a younger age, Botox can help prevent the formation of wrinkles, laugh lines, and crow’s feet before they appear. By starting treatments early, patients can retain their youthful appearance longer without the need for more invasive procedures.

Doing Away with Taboo

It’s no secret that millennials are more progressive and liberal than the generations that came before them. Part of that attitude is the normalization of subjects and practices that were once considered taboo. We live in a new age that celebrates the individual and challenging the status quo.

Where once plastic surgery was seen as the bastion of age-fearing older women, it is now seen as a source of empowerment for young women and men alike. More and more practitioners are reporting patients younger than 30 requesting cosmetic procedures, and more young people than ever are willing to openly discuss their desires and experiences related to plastic surgery.

Alternative Uses for Botox that May Surprise You

The vast majority of people have heard of Botox. It is well known as a cosmetic procedure used by those hoping to give themselves a smoother, more youthful appearance.

While there is no doubt that its cosmetic uses are what have made the treatment so popular, many don’t realize that Botox has the ability to treat a variety of other conditions that you might not have expected. Let’s take a look at a few of these alternative uses that you may find surprising.

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating and can be a real issue for those affected by it. Fortunately, Botox may be an unlikely solution to this problem.

By applying the injection directly to the areas most affected, sweating can be reduced by as much as 87 percent! This can be life-changing for those who have lived with hyperhidrosis for most of their lives. More confidence, fewer loads of laundry, and no more sweat stains.

The best part is that it might even be covered by your insurance! If prescription antiperspirants and oral medications don’t do the trick, it’s likely that your insurance carrier will cover Botox treatments.

Frequent Migraines

Migraines are painful and maddening experiences, and if you’ve ever experienced them, you know just how desperate they can make you for relief. For some, though, that relief is only a brief respite, as migraines are a chronic issue.

Current medications used to treat frequent migraines range from antidepressants to blood pressure drugs. However, you might be surprised to learn that the correct application of Botox injection can result in fewer headaches. For those who suffer from chronic migraines, this can make a huge difference in the quality of their lives.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or TMJ, is a condition that affects the joint in the jaw. Those afflicted with TMJ often experience pain in one or both of the joints that connect the jaw to the skull. This can cause difficulty eating, locking of the joint, and persistent facial aches. Needless to say, this can make a number of normal activities into uncomfortable chores.

By injecting Botox into the jaw, the muscles that control the joint are relaxed, leading to relief from pain and many of the other symptoms associated with TMJ. Many dentists recommend Botox treatment for this condition, and the procedure is often covered by insurance.

Eyelid Spasms

Sometimes, the connections in our brain don’t behave the way they’re supposed to. When this happens, it can cause a cascade of unexpected problems, ranging from mildly annoying to nearly debilitating. For some, this takes the form of blepharospasms, or eyelid spasms. This can lead to droopy eyelids and uncontrollable twitches. The spasms can be so severe in some patients that they are unable to keep their eyes open enough to see.

One of the properties of Botox is its ability to cause temporary paralysis, effectively blocking the way the nerves communicate with the muscle. Used for this purpose, the connection between the brain and spasming muscle can be cut off, providing relief from the symptoms of the condition.

Find Out More

Doctors are finding more uses for Botox all the time, and this list is only a small portion of the treatment’s applications. The effects can vary from patient to patient, and typically last around three to four months. While it may be a temporary solution, it can still provide relief for a variety of chronic conditions.

What is Dysport and How does it Compare to Botox?

Botox is among the most popular cosmetic treatments available. Highly regarded for its abilities to freeze fine lines and wrinkles in their tracks, this injectable has developed incredible name recognition in just a few short decades. However, this treatment isn’t the only one available for patients looking to look younger. Since its FDA approval in 2009, Dysport has quickly become a popular alternative to Botox for patients, giving the name brand a run for its money.

Dysport vs. Botox – Is there a Difference?

Fundamentally, Dysport and Botox are more similar than different. Both injectables are derived from botulinum toxin type A, a bacteria by-product that has been successfully used as a medical solution to temporomandibular joint disorder and overactive sweat glands. When used for cosmetic purposes, the toxin helps put the aging process on pause by temporarily paralyzing underlying muscles of the face and preventing them from contracting and from creating additional lines or creases.

When it comes to results, Dysport tends to offer noticeable results within a day of treatment, making it slightly faster than its counterpart. Similarly, the effects of Dysport can remain noticeable up to six months following treatment, a jump from the three to four months Botox patients usually have between visits.

The most significant differences between the two are the formula concentration and their structural make up, factors which lead to different patient experiences in achieving the same results. Botox molecules are structurally larger than Dysport, making them ideal for precise application in specific parts of the face. In contrast, Dysport molecules are smaller, allowing the injectables to disperse over a greater area after it has been administered. For patients looking to correct wrinkles affecting larger areas such as the forehead or crow’s feet, this dispersion makes it possible to achieve ideal results with less injections.

The Ideal Dysport Candidate

Given the vast similarities between the two options, any patient who is a candidate for Dysport injections is eligible for Botox. Whether you’re looking to take a preventive approach to aging or are trying to slow the development of wrinkles, Dysport is an excellent, non-surgical solution to removing creases and wrinkles. Likewise, the fast treatment sessions and minimal recovery time have made Dysport a popular option for patients who do not have the time to wait for surgical enhancements.

Injectables- 15 Minutes for a Younger Looking You

Looking younger doesn’t have to take a lot of time. If you have 15-20 minutes, you have time to rejuvenate with injectables. Many injectable treatments require no downtime.
● Botox/Dysport- Smooth away wrinkles caused by muscle movement including crow’s feet, lines between the brows, and forehead creases. Botox and Dysport relax the muscles that cause these wrinkles, allowing them to smooth and fade away. Results last 3-4 months with a single treatment.
● Dermal Fillers- Dermal fillers are a versatile rejuvenation option. We can use them to restore youthful facial volume, to smooth lines and wrinkles, and even to augment the lips. We offer a wide range of fillers, allowing us to customize your treatment to your specific needs and problem areas. Results can last for several months to years, depending on the filler used.

S-Lift- Dramatic Facial Rejuvenation That Lasts

Take years off of your look with an S-Lift, or mini-facelift. This procedure rejuvenates the lower face and neck by repositioning the deep facial tissues. An S-Lift is a popular choice because it allows for very natural looking results with a shorter recovery period and shorter scars than a traditional facelift. Patients find that this procedure is like a reset for their appearance. You’ll continue to age, but you’ll always look younger than you would have without the surgery.

Laser Resurfacing- Discover Your Best Skin

Youthful skin is still possible, but you may need a little help to achieve it. Laser skin resurfacing removes the outermost layer of skin and allowing new skin to grow. We use a non-ablative laser system that removes only the superficial, external layers of skin, leaving the dermis undamaged. This allows for a more comfortable treatment experience with almost no downtime. Laser resurfacing can fade brown spots, smooth lines and wrinkles, tighten sagging skin, and brighten dull skin.
You don’t have to turn back the clock to discover better skin. With our anti-aging treatments you can defy time and look younger, no matter your age. Call us today and schedule your treatments.

Botox Before Wrinkles? The Benefits of Getting Botox Before Wrinkles Become a Problem

It’s common knowledge that Botox treatments are popular for individuals over 40. What most people don’t know is that the anti-aging injectables aren’t exclusive to men and women in their 40s, 50s, or 60s.

Individuals in their middle 20s or early 30s who notice fine lines, crows’ feet, laugh lines, or wrinkles on their faces can benefit from Botox.  If this is you, and this treatment has crossed your mind, here are a few benefits you can enjoy from this injectable before wrinkles become a problem.

  1. Delays the permanent development of wrinkles

While there is no way to stop the natural aging process, you can delay the appearance of aging from your face. Botox injection can help as it can inhibit facial muscle contractions. When muscles cannot contract, wrinkles cannot form and become permanent fixtures in the face. With the treatment, not only will you be able to curb fine lines from further development, you’ll also be able to prevent the formation of new wrinkles.

  1. Treats the signs of aging easily than 10 years later

If doctors find it easy to treat an illness in its early stage, cosmetic doctors also find it easy to treat the signs of aging when they are still in the development stage. If you want your face to have fewer wrinkles by the time you hit late 40s or 50s, you might want to take preventative steps as early as now. Wrinkles and other fine lines are easier to treat when they are still in their initial development than when they are at an advanced stage.

External elements, such as free radicals and sun exposure, can speed up the aging process. Before you know it, the signs of aging are already visible in your face and can be difficult to treat. Therefore, you can use Botox as a preventative treatment if constant exposure to such elements is a threat to your skin.

  1. Saves on treatment cost

Excessively developed wrinkles can cost $2,000 or more per year. If you decide to treat facial lines and creases before they become a problem, you can save $1,000 or more per year. If you want to save on anti-aging treatments, the decision to have Botox injections early on can help you save in the end.

Botox is safe for use even for young adults, and only when administered by a board-certified plastic surgeon. To learn more about Botox treatments, consult a licensed practitioner. Call Abadir Associates today.

How to Achieve the Perfect Valentine’s Day Look with Injectables

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and you want to look your best for your true love. Of course, you can revamp your wardrobe, redo your hair, or even change your makeup routine; but wouldn’t it be better if you can change your look down to the smallest details? This romantic holiday calls for a complete transformation—one that’s as natural and long-lasting as possible. Abadir Associates is here to tell you how to achieve the perfect Valentine’s Day look.

The latest trend in injections are two products which, when injected into the upper area of the cheeks, usually along the cheekbones, not only replace some of the volume we all loose with age, but actually significantly LIFT!

These products are Restylane’s “LYFT” and Juvederm’s “VOLUMA”.   Very different from the original Restylane and Juvederm, they are more “robust” and able when injected in the appropriate sites, to actually give an immediate and noticeable lifting of the cheeks, thus improving laugh lines and the lower cheeks. Placement varies according to the particular patient. The amount of “filling” is not excessive (each syringe only contains 1cc—a fifth of a teaspoon—most patients use 1 or 2!).  However the effect is instant, pleasing, giving you a more youthful appearance. Give yourself the gift of Voluma or Lyft!

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin

These neuromodulators are all similar and contain botulin toxin Type A. When injected into a muscle, they weaken, or completely prevent, that muscle’s contraction. Where the muscle in causing the development of undesirable lines or expression, such as frowning, the result is aesthetically pleasing.

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are the only three FDA-approved neuromodulators, although more could soon be approved. Drs. Dale and Michelle Abadir have been injecting Botox for over 20 years and have vast experience.

Lesser known Dysport and Xeomin have similar actions. Dysport takes effect a little faster, and Xeomin has no protein. While this is usually insignificant, on rare occasions patients have developed antibodies to the proteins in Botox and Dysport. These antibodies destroy the product when injected, making it ineffective (the same way antibodies to disease-causing viruses and bacteria will kill them).

Drs. Dale and Michelle Abadir will discuss with you the various types of neuromodulators, benefits and likely duration (which varies depending on which muscles they are used in), and recommend the best for you!

Botox-Not Just for Wrinkles

abadir-botoxBotox. There are good reasons why it’s considered the gold standard in skin rejuvenation treatments. It works quickly, the procedure is incredibly simple, and the results are simply stunning; after a 30-minute procedure, Botox can reduce wrinkles and expression lines for up to 2-4 months! What’s even more amazing is that Botox isn’t just for beauty—in fact, Botox can improve someone’s life by providing relief for debilitating migraines. That’s right, in 2010, Botox was FDA-approved to help prevent chronic migraines, giving hope to migraine sufferers everywhere.

What Else Can Botox Treat?

USA Today called Botox “The little neurotoxin that could” because of its unbelievably wide range of treatments: Botox has been used to treat muscle spasms, muscle stiffness, excessive sweating, overactive bladder or loss of bladder control, and abnormal head positions. Nowadays, the most prominent medical treatment for Botox is for migraines.

What’s a migraine?

If it’s frequent enough, a migraine can be a debilitating condition; it’s an incredibly intense, painful headache that happens with nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Chronic migraines are migraines that occur in at least 15 days of the month and last for more than 4 hours.

How Long Has Botox Been Used to Treat Migraines?

Like most of the greatest innovations in human history, Botox as a migraine treatment was discovered entirely by accident. It seems that many Botox consumers who also suffered migraines noticed their migraines were significantly reduced after receiving Botox. Soon enough, multiple studies were conducted that actually showed that a good majority of people suffering from migraines experienced some sort of relief after a treatment regimen of Botox. On average, patients suffered 9 less migraines a month compared to before the Botox treatment.

How Does Botox Treat Migraines?

It’s funny—but the exact mechanism for how Botox treats migraines isn’t entirely known. There are however, a few hypotheses floating around. Botox is a neuromodulator, meaning it affects how our nerve endings send signals to our muscles. More specifically, it stops those signals, leading those muscles to relax and unable to contract. This mechanism relaxes the muscles that causes wrinkles and lines in the face, thus creating a smoother, more relaxed expression. It’s been said that Botox might stop the signals that register pain in our nervous system, or relaxes stiff or tense muscles in the head that might lead to migraines.

What’s a Botox Treatment Like?

Botox for migraines is somewhat similar to Botox for rejuvenation: it’s usually a series of injections that are applied in 2-3 sets spaced out over 12 week intervals. The injections are painless and applied all over the body: your temples, forehead, neck, bridge of the nose, back of the head, upper shoulders and back.
