SKIN CANCER SCREENING & TREATMENT
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that everyone have a yearly skin examination. Skin cancers are best treated early.
BASAL CELL, SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Many different methods of treatment are now available for the most common types of skin cancer-basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. These include: surgical excision, irradiation, freezing, curettage and electrodessication, topical imiquimod , and Moh's micrographic surgery. Selecting the best treatment will depend on the type of cancer, location, and size, as well as the age of the patient, among several other factors.
MALIGNANT MELANOMA
Malignant melanomas, which are potentially deadly cancers, are sometimes not discovered until they have spread beyond the skin. In fair skinned people, who have light-colored eyes, malignant melanomas may be light in color-even pink-not the typical dark brown or black shades. It is possible to test strangely appearing moles while they are still in the pre-cancerous stage, and avoid developing a malignant melanoma in the future. With regular skin cancer screening unusual moles can be monitored for malignant changes.
Drs. Dale and Michelle Abadir, have both had extensive experience in the field of diagnosing and treating skin cancer. Dr. Dale Abadir has been a member of the Medical Council of the Skin Cancer Foundation since its inception. Dr. Michelle Abadir completed a fellowship in malignant melanoma at New York University and has published on the subject. Both Drs. currently teach skin cancer diagnosis and treatment as part the surgical training they provide to Albert Einstein's dermatology residents.
